Birchbox Harper’s Bazaar Edit May 2014 | Contents & First Impressions

When my Birchbox Harper’s Bazaar Edit May 2014 edit dropped through my door last week, I was really excited by the stunning, brightly coloured, floral and peacock design of the box. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that themed or collaborative boxes are always so fun to receive. For the May box, Birchbox have collaborated with the iconic publication that is Harper’s Bazaar.

The Harper’s Bazaar Birchbox is said to feature beauty and lifestyle products co-curated by the magazine’s experts and the editors of Birchbox. Excitingly enough, inside the box is a card with an amazing, exclusive offer where you can subscribe to Harper’s Bazaar for 12 issues for only £12, which is a huge saving of 76%.. as each copy retails for £4.20 normally.

One of my favourite aspects about Birchbox, is that you’re able to purchase the full size of any of the samples you receive each month from the Birchbox Shop, and all brand’s from the current month’s box have free delivery (on orders over £10). They have such a huge amount of brands including theBalm, RMK, Benefit, TAAJ, Murad and Korres to name but a few. Plus, just incase you’re new to Birchbox, the monthly boxes cost just £12.95* delivered.

When I opened my Birchbox for the first time, I was taken aback by how crammed full it seemed to be, and I instantly spotted a couple of well known brands which is always a very welcome sight…

Benefit They’re Real! Mascara (3g Sample worth £6.88)
Benefit are one of my favourite makeup brands, so I’m always very grateful to receive their products… especially when it is Benefit’s They’re Real! Mascara, as it’s one of my all time favourite mascaras.
I’ve previously reviewed They’re Real! here on my blog but in a nutshell it’s an amazing lengthening mascara which never seems to clump on my lashes, and leaves all of my lashes perfectly separated. It has a very black formula which I love as it makes my lashes look dramatic and I love that it never flakes or crumbles throughout the day – it doesn’t budge.
I’ve never actually bought the full size of They’re Real! as I always seem to get my hands on a new sample some way or another every few months or so but I would definitely purchase the full size as it’s such a good mascara.

Soigné ‘Cerise’ Nail Lacquer (Full size worth £11)
This is the only full size product within the box, and is a beautifully packaged nail polish in a raspberry pink shade. I’ve never heard of the brand before, but I love shades like this. Soigné is a new non-toxic nail polish brand which I imagine will be quite popular as it feels so luxurious for £11 compared to say Nails Inc polishes. The formula is so smooth, and very nearly opaque in just one coat and has a mirror-like shine.

Aromatherapy Associates Revive Morning Bath & Shower Oil (3ml sample worth £2.18)
Aromatherapy Associates oils are incredible, and are all so effective. Revive Morning is a blend of pink grapefruit, rosemary and juniper berry which will soften the skin as well as uplift the mood. To use the oil you simply add a capful into your bath or smooth over your skin before showering.
My favourite way to use Aromatherapy Associates oils is to apply them directly to my pulse points. Revive smells quite punchy and invigorating which is why it’s perfect for use in the mornings. This tiny 3ml size is perfect to carry around in my handbag, for on the go applications.

Beauty Protector Protect & Shampoo and Protect & Condition (30ml each worth £1.77 each)
Beauty Protector is a brand I’ve never heard of before, but I like that they’ve included a sample of both the shampoo and conditioner so you can really see how they perform as a duo. They are both Sulfate and Paraben free, suitable for all hair types and claim to be moisture reviving, enhance volume, add shine, seals cuticles, smooths hair and seals cuticles as well as having UV protection.
They are also supposedly packed with rich vitamins, and honey pearl powder which works similarly to Keratin to treat destroyed ends. They both smell really lovely, with a subtle toffee scent and I only need around a 10 pence size amount per wash, so these will last me for a fair few washes, so I’m interested to see the results, if any after 2-3 uses.

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser & Muslin Cloth (30ml sample worth £4.42)
The last product within the box is a generous 30ml Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish which is quite the cult favourite, and loved by many. I’ve never actually tried the Cleanse and Polish before so I’m excited to try it for myself and see if it’s worth the hype it receives. I’m really enjoying using cream cleansers right now, so I imagine I’ll love this one too.
Cleanse and Polish is suitable for all skin types, and contains naturally active ingredients include eucalyptus and cocoa butter and has won an amazing 100 awards so far. I love that they included a muslin cloth too, in a delicately wrapped package which is such a nice touch.
Overall I really love this Birchbox Harper’s Bazaar box as there’s such a great mix of products.. makeup, skincare, haircare and a nail polish. The box has a value of £28 which is great and I’ll definitely get a lot of use out of everything I received this month.. there isn’t anything that I don’t like.
The box is so pretty alone, and has already made its way into my makeup storage drawers, and I love the neon orange drawstring bag too as they make a great way to store my dirty makeup brushes, waiting to be cleaned. I really do think that this month’s box is my favourite of 2014 so far.
