I have been a blogger since 2012 and I’ve owned a lot of different cameras over the years from all different price points. I started off using my phone, but quickly realised that my phone at the time just wasn’t up to the job of taking good quality photos. Phone cameras have come a long, long way and now the cameras on phones can rival actual cameras but I never had success with my phone when I first started. After blogging for a year, I invested in a Nikon DSLR (the Nikon D5100) and I absolutely loved it, and it took all of my blog photos from July 2013 until November 2015 when I purchased my Olympus PEN E-PL7 Compact System Camera.
The Olympus Pen cameras got so, so much hype in 2015 after they held a workshop and gifted lots of popular bloggers with their cameras which was genius as their readers could see how amazing their photos were, and they then wanted that camera.
I was happy with my Nikon DSLR but it was huge and heavy, especially with massive lenses so the Olympus Pen really appealed to me as it was much more compact, and the wifi function won me over as the thought of taking photos and being able to send them to my phone instantly was like a dream come true.
I’ve had my camera for four years now, and it’s still going strong body wise and if it broke tomorrow I would 100% repurchase a newer model of the Olympus PEN series as I’ve been so wowed by the technology.
This isn’t going to be a tech spec kind of review as makeup is my thing, and I don’t know very much about the tech side of cameras but I can tell you that this camera has been so insanely easy to use, and you don’t have to understand everything to do with photography, aperture, exposure etc to be able to use it which is why I love it so much.
Olympus PEN E-PL7 Compact System Camera description from Jessops which has been my chosen retailer for Olympus purchases:
“Stylish, lightweight and compact, the Olympus E-PL7 is a mirrorless camera aimed at enthusiast photographers looking for better image quality than a smartphone and lenses you can change.
Featuring a high-sensitivity 16.1-megapixel Live MOS Micro Four Thirds sensor and fast 81-area Multi AF the E-PL7 can be used to produce high-quality images that still look good when printed large or viewed on big screens such as tablets and TVs.
Compatible with over 40 Olympus micro-four-thirds lenses, the E-PL7 is a great choice for a wide range of photographic areas from street photography and fashion, to travel photography and landscapes.
With 3-axis in-body image stabilisation technology and a large ISO sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600, the E-PL7 is a good camera for shooting in challenging lighting conditions handheld. It also comes with a built-in pop-up flash when some extra light need.
The beautifully styled E-PL7 uses the Olympus TruePic VII image processor, designed to produce high-quality images with natural colours, great detail and low image noise. The camera is also capable of tackling fast-moving subjects, buffering full-resolution still images up to an impressive 8fps.
It also has a number of Art Filters and creative scene modes to help photographers get more out of their images in-camera.
The camera’s tiltable 3.0-inch 1037k-dot touchscreen LCD offers a sharp display for composing images, with touch control for tactile operation and touch autofocus. The Olympus E-PL7 in white has a stylish contemporary take on a retro look, with tactile controls.
But it isn’t just aesthetically pleasing, it’s an approachable camera, with a tough, portable body that offers full manual control, as well as fantastic creative auto modes.
Olympus E-PL7 – Video recording and connectivity: The E-PL7 can deliver quality Full HD 1080/30p video. Using the camera’s 3-axis image stabilisation, the E-PL7 can record steady video footage when performing handheld camera movements.
Olympus E-PL7 owners can also use the Olympus OI.Share app to connect their cameras to Android and Apple iOS smart devices using Wi-Fi and NFC, for seamless photo sharing and wireless camera control.
Bundled with Olympus E-PL7 14-42mm: The Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 lens offers an equivalent focal range of 28-84mm in 35mm terms, giving users 3x zoom. Small and lightweight, the 14-42mm is suitable for capturing wide scenes such as in landscape photography, group photos and street photography, as well as portraits. It also has a minimum focusing distance of 25cm.
One of my favourite features of the Olympus PEN E-PL7 Compact System Camera, is definitely the flip out screen as it allows you to be able to manouvre the screen so you can see what you’re photographing regardless of the angle you’re shooting. I cannot rave about this camera enough. It has made such a massive difference to the quality of my blog photos and whenever I’m asked about the camera I’d recommend, it’s always, always the Olympus PEN series.
As soon as this one dies, I think I’m going to purchase the ninth series but considering I take photos for my blog every single day, it’s incredible that it has lasted for four years and is still going strong (touch wood). The lenses I own are the following; Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6, the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 45mm 1:1.8 and the MCON‑P02 Macro Converter for macro shots like those taken in this post.
