Maybelline Tattoo Liner Gel Pencil Review / Swatches

Eyeliner is one of my favourite steps within my makeup routine, as I find it can transform a whole makeup look. I wasn’t gifted in the lash department, so I like to use eyeliner to give my lashlines a little more definition.

To try and make my eyes look a little more defined, and I’ve been wearing eyeliner almost everyday since I was 14 so I’ve tried a hell of a lot of eyeliners over the years. Call me high maintenance but I like to use two different types of eyeliner each time I wear eyeliner.

For my waterline, I like to use eyeliner pencils and for my upper lashline I like to use gel or a liquid liner. Finding a good eyeliner pencil is no mean feat regardless of the price, but the claims on the new Maybelline Tattoo Liner Gel Pencil had me sold instantly, so I knew I had to buy it in Deep Onyx; their matte black shade.

The Maybelline Tattoo Liner Gel Pencil is £4.99 and available in eight shades according to the Maybelline website. However we in the UK are never gifted with the same shade ranges as the US, and we currently only have two shades to choose from in Superdrug and Boots. Two shades – no joke.

Do Maybelline not think those of us in the UK want more than just black and brown eyeliners?! You can purchase seven shades on Amazon but you’re always buying at your own risk on Amazon, so with eye makeup in particular I do prefer to buy from a physical store.

So many eyeliners claim to be longlasting and very few deliver. My favourite black eyeliner pencil until now has been the Urban Decay Perversion 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil which is extremely intense, smooth and longlasting however, the Maybelline Tattoo Liner Gel Pencil is better. I’ve repurchased my Perversion Liner at least five times over the years and at £16 a pop, they’re not cheap especially when it’s a product I use daily.

These two swatches of the Maybelline Tattoo Liner Gel Pencil are just one single swipe each, with the bottom being a thicker line by simply tilting the pencil.. I can’t believe how intense this pencil is.

It’s fully opaque with no patchiness so you only need one swipe across your lid/waterline, it’s so buttery soft and it’s by far the most pigmented and intense eyeliner pencil I’ve ever tried. I just wish Boots and Superdrug stocked the other shades as I need them in my life…

The waterline is such a nightmare place for eyeliner as the tears in your eyes can just dissolve it and it ends up transferring below your lashes. I don’t know how Maybelline have done it, but this formula does. not. budge.

I’ve been moaning on Twitter quite a lot recently about how bad my hayfever has been and all of my other makeup has looked a total mess after a thousand sneezes and runny eyes, but not my eyeliner. The only way to remove this liner is with an oil-based makeup remover, and Maybelline say it’s sebum resistant and waterproof, and I have to agree; it’s practically permanent eyeliner.

The 36 hour weartime claims made me roll me eyes but I genuinely think it could last that long if you wanted it to. I’ve only worn it for a maximum of 17 hours so far and I wouldn’t want to wear it any longer than that, but if you need an eyeliner that lasts, you *need* to try the Maybelline Tattoo Liner Gel Pencil.

It’s the best eyeliner tattoo pencil full stop and the fact it’s £4.99 blows my mind, and it even has a built in sharpener so although it’s soft, you can keep the nib nice and precise. I already know it’s going to feature in my 2019 favourites – it’s that good.

Have you tried the Maybelline Tattoo Liner Gel Pencil yet?
